The "A Day with the Shepherd" experience aims to introduce an activity, now residual and almost extinct, that once characterized the daily life of the mountainous regions in Portugal, Herding!

At Capril da Serra, in São Miguel de Poiares, we have resumed this practice, seeking to safeguard the native Serrana-Ribatejana breed, showing its particularities, routines, and secrets.

While observing the role of the flock in restoring the ecosystem, reducing combustible vegetation and making it more resilient to fires, you are discovering all the beauty and natural heritage of the local area in a sustainable way.

CAPRIL DA SERRA

FEATURES

The route is made in the company of the Shepherd, at the pace of the hostesses - the Serrana-Ribatejana goats - with as many stops as they wish.

Starts at 9:00 am, departing from Capril da Serra, with return to the same location. The reunion after lunchtime is optional, at a time to be arranged with the Shepherd.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL

Circular route on dirt trails, with uneven terrain, with ups and downs, in a mountain environment and with a distance that can range from 2 to 4 km.

Accessible to the general public - suitable for all ages and with a low level of difficulty.

PREPARATION

You should wear comfortable clothing, appropriate for the weather conditions expected for the day of the excursion, a cap, and suitable footwear for walking in nature. It is recommended to bring a water flask and a small snack.

Leave nothing but your footprints on the trails and take all the trash you produce with you!

VERY IMPORTANT

Pay attention to the instructions given by the Shepherd, both regarding the trails and regarding interactions with the goats, because they are working, keeping the undergrowth low and thus protecting the landscapes more from fires.

REGISTRATION

Through the services of the Parish Council of São Miguel de Poiares, on weekdays, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, and from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Activity limited to 10 participants*, and may be postponed or canceled due to weather conditions.

No pets are allowed.
